At Shalom Institute of Mental Health and Research, we believe that mental health care goes beyond medical treatment—it includes nurturing the mind and soul. This is why we are committed to creating an environment that supports holistic healing, where books play an integral role. As Charles W. Eliot eloquently stated, “Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers.”
Books as a Source of Comfort and Knowledge
Books provide comfort and offer patients at our facility a means of escape, knowledge, and reflection. Whether it's through reading about mental health, learning new coping mechanisms, or simply enjoying a fictional journey, books are powerful companions on the road to recovery.
Recognizing this, we recently participated in a Book Donation Campaign initiated by Sacred Hearts College, Chalakudy. This event, held on March 16th, saw the enthusiastic involvement of students from the Department of Psychology, who helped collect over 300 books for our patients. Their dedication and passion for the cause have significantly enriched the lives of those at Shalom Institute.
More than Just Financial Support
One of the most heartening aspects of this campaign is how it demonstrates that support for mental health doesn’t always have to be financial. Contributions can come in many forms, and donating books is a powerful way to make a lasting impact. These 300 books are now available to our patients, offering them wisdom, solace, and inspiration.
We are incredibly thankful to Sacred Hearts College for instigating this campaign, and to the psychology students who organized and led the initiative with great enthusiasm. Their efforts have truly made a difference in our facility, reminding us of the profound impact small acts of kindness can have.
How You Can Get Involved
While the campaign may be over, there are still many ways you can contribute to our mission at Shalom Institute. Whether it's through donating books, volunteering your time, or raising awareness about mental health, every bit of support counts. Together, we can create a community that values mental health and well-being, where patients have access to not only the medical care they need but also the emotional and intellectual support that books can offer.
Join Us in Supporting Mental Health
